As I’ve pondered my Vision for 10+ years in the future, one of the areas that I see the need for growth is Public Speaking.
My thinking is this: If I want to be a person of Influence, I need to be someone worth listening to. I’m more comfortable speaking than writing, therefore I should work on improving my speaking skills as others work on their writing skills.
The only problem? I have fear of speaking to large groups. I draw blanks when speaking to groups. I stumble on words when speaking a prepared talk. Sounds like I need work!
This week I did something that I’ve been meaning to do for the past 7 or more years: I attended a Toastmasters meeting. This meant that I had to get up earlier than normal and attend a meeting cold-turkey without knowing anyone.
One of the main reasons that Iattended Toastmasters is because of the example of my friends at http://rise365.com/. I needed to get over my inhibitions and my excuses and just get out the door. Set the alarm clock and get up early to do what I know needs doing even if it is outside of my comfort zone.
The great news? I actually know someone in the group that I worked with many many years ago. The other great news? I met some really amazing people! The group is small (less than 10 people) and very encouraging. I did a table-topic talk and think I did OK.
I plan to visit another group or two to decide which group to join, and then I’ll join one long term.
